‘Downton Abbey’ season 3: A peek at Lady Mary’s romantic wedding gown

The most popular PBS show returns to American television tonight at 9 p. m. ET.

The new season of ‘Downton Abbey’ premieres on PBS's Masterpiece Classic and ushers in not only the higher hemlines of the 1920s, but adds new cast member Shirley MacLaine, who plays Lady Cora’s mother, Martha Levinson.

Now in its third season, the show kicks off with a wedding, maybe?

While it is not confirmed whether or not the wedding actually takes place, this season, fans are looking forward to a stylish and sophisticated Lady Mary walking down the aisle with her distant cousin, Matthew Crawley.

Elegant, romantic and soft - that is how the show’s costume designer, Caroline McCall describes the wedding gown, reports PEOPLE on Jan. 6. Entertainment Weekly (EW) has a photo of the gown.

"I wanted her wedding dress to have a bit of softness," McCall told EW. "I wanted her to look really romantic, really elegant."

This is the most expensive costume to date, reports EW.

McCall spent eight weeks working on the design, which features, “a long-sleeved lace dress fitted with tiny Swarovski crystals and rice pearls.” The wedding ensemble also includes a vintage bridal veil accented by a $200,000 45-carat diamond tiara from U.K. jeweler Bentley & Skinner.
