'Downton Abbey' Season 5 trailer: Things are heating up

Things are surely changing at “Downton Abbey” in season 5. On Sunday, Entertainment Weekly quoted Mrs. Hughes’ analysis of the change, “Downton is catching up with the times we live in.” The trailer for the new season was released Aug. 30, and it appears to foreshadow a memorable season on the British drama that returns to the United States on PBS on Jan. 5. What seems to be a fire in the historic manor is not the only part of the series that will be heating up.

The changing mores of society are finally becoming apparent in Downton’s storyline, and that might just not be such a great thing! If the teasers are being interpreted correctly, the show may look more like “Desperate Housewives” than a prim and proper historic English estate. Huffington Post has untangled a few details from the always-jangled trailer. Supposedly, Lady Mary Crowley will decide she wants Lord Gillingham after all. The Countess of Grantham, usually portrayed as a spunky but devoted wife, is possibly involved with a newcomer to the show, Simon Bricker, played by Richard E. Grant.

There is a scene in the trailer where Tom is carrying out the two children in what seems to be a fire in Downton. Common sense tells us that the place will NOT burn to the ground, but there may be some damages to parts of the house. Tom is involved with a new love this season, which is sure to give viewers a sentimental jerk as they remember Sybil’s sad death in childbirth.

Viewers will probably get more than their share of spoilers before January as the details from the show leak out. The series shows in the UK before it makes it here via public television. It remains to be seen whether the jolt forward into the less formal time period is seen as a positive thing for the fans.
