If you're still crying into your tea over the tragic ending to Downton Abbey's third season finale (Hey, Americans: at least you didn't have to go through that on Christmas Day!), a brand-new teaser is out for the upcoming fourth season, as well as a date for the first full trailer.
Wetpaint reported on Sunday that the popular period drama wrapped up filming of season four last week, the finale of which is slated to be another Christmas special in the U.K., and the 10-second teaser came right on the heels of the conclusion of filming. In it, we see a set of doors open into bright white as the voice of the Dowager Countess (played by Maggie Smith) says:
"You have a straightforward choice before you. You must choose either death or life."
Many seem to agree that Dowager Countess Violet is talking to granddaughter Lady Mary, who was (*sob*) left a widow with a baby boy at the end of last season. Mary's life going forward will no doubt be a major plot point of season four, as she is largely involved with the future of Downton.
The end of the teaser revealed that fans can expect the full trailer on Aug. 31, when we will hopefully get a better idea of what's to come for the Crawleys this time around. What we do know is that we won't be subjected to the immediate aftermath of Matthew's death, as the premiere will pick up six months down the road from where we left off. Season four premieres in the U.K. in mid-September, while Americans will have to wait until the Jan. 5, 2014 premiere on PBS.
