It looks like “Downton Abbey” will have to find someone else to mend Lady Mary’s broken heart in the upcoming season four. It was rumored earlier this week that Welsh actor Tom Ellis was on tap to play the role of her new love in the popular Masterpiece Classic series. However, TV Line has confirmed on Feb. 21 that the 33-year-old actor has instead snagged a role in a new ABC soap called “Gothica.”
Even though the “Miranda” star had auditioned for the coveted role in the PBS series, it was not to be. Ellis is slated to portray Victor Frankenstein in a modern day setting. Victor runs a hospital that also happens to do biotech research and he is trying to find a way to bring his deceased daughter back to life. This Gothic soap also weaves in the characters of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, and other mythologies.
As for “Downton Abbey,” it looks like the search is still on for that perfect man to fill in as Mary’s new suitor after the tragic death of the love of her life, Matthew. He will certainly have some big shoes to fill.
Are you happy for Tom Ellis on his new gig or were you looking forward to seeing him on season four of “Downton Abbey?”
