PBS hit series “Downton Abbey” is losing yet another key character. Siobhan Finneran, who plays the role of Sarah O’Brien, has confirmed that she will not be coming back for season four. According to the Mirror posted on March 1, the actress will not continue on with her role as the conniving maid that fans have grown to love.
Finneran has been with the show from the very beginning and has been scheming her way through ever since. She dished on her departure saying, “I’m not doing any more. O’Brien is a thoroughly despicable human being - that was great to play.” O’Brien was the cause of Lady Crawley’s miscarriage and was in cahoots with her cigarette-smoking pal, Thomas. She is tough and can be spiteful and full of revenge, but she has also softened up just a little bit since season one. Thomas is now considered an enemy and she has shown some remorse for what she did to Cora.
As if fans weren’t shaken up enough by the departure of both Dan Stevens (Matthew) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Sybil) in season three, this may be just another blow for them with yet another main character leaving. However, a spokeswoman for “Downton Abbey” has said that the door could be left open for Finneran's return, so maybe she will pop in just to torment her fellow servants in the future. It has been said that there will be no dramatic departure for her as there was with Sybil and Matthew. It will be interesting to see how they send Sarah O’Brien off but it will be sure to leave a gap downstairs in the Abbey.
Will you miss Sarah O’Brien and her scheming ways on “Downton Abbey?”
