“Downton Abbey” is always up for a wedding. After Lady Mary’s nuptials last week, it is her sister’s turn to shine on the second episode of season three, which aired on Jan. 13. Edith was happy to accept the marriage proposal of Sir Anthony, but not everyone is thrilled with her decision. Her husband-to-be is old enough to be her father. At the start of this episode, the house is bustling with excitement with flowers in place and as clean as can be. After all, this might be the last wedding celebration at Downton since it is up for sale after Robert’s bad investment.
Edith is considered by most the ‘ugly duckling’ of the family. Her actions against her older sister by exposing Mary’s secret didn’t help matters any. The sister rivalry has always been there but for now, Mary puts all of that aside and wishes her sister the best of luck. Edith is just happy that she found someone to marry and says, “For once, something happening in this house is about me!” How true that is. She is beautiful in her vintage wedding gown and is glowing.
Sir Anthony doesn’t seem to be glowing. As Edith is walking down the aisle towards him, you get a bad feeling already. Things are not going to end well. He waits until the wedding starts to put a stop to it. He tells his young bride that he can’t marry her after all. He declares, “I can’t let you throw away your life like this.” The Dowager Countess is quick to get up and declare to her granddaughter to let him go.
The middle Crawley sister is devastated, especially when she looks at her newly wedded older sister and happily married and pregnant little sister. She must figure that she is destined to be alone and unhappy. The next morning as Anna asks if she wants breakfast brought up, Edith declares herself a spinster and says, “Spinsters get up for breakfast.” Will the poor girl ever find true love?
In other “Downton Abbey” news, Mrs. Hughes will live on! Her tumor is benign, which is great because Carson just can’t survive without her. Bates is in trouble in prison and Anna is doing whatever she can to prove his innocence. Fans are still screaming, "Free Mr. Bates!"
The biggest news of all is that Downton is saved! Matthew comes through with his second windfall of money from Lavinia’s father to be able to keep his new wife and her family safely tucked away in their beloved home.
All is well for now, that is until next week when pregnant Sybil looks like she is in trouble. Look for episode three of “Downton Abby” Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST on PBS.
