‘Downton Abbey’ season 3 finale spoiler: Matthew and Mary have ‘done their duty’

Yes, Matthew and Mary have certainly done their duty on “Downton Abbey.” This couple not only produced an adorable baby, but they also gave viewers the best of their relationship, all in one night. The season three finale aired on Feb. 17 on PBS. Even with the tragic ending, this episode proved to be one of the most touching ones yet.

It started with Lady Mary already eight months pregnant after fast forwarding through one year since the last episode. Everything seems to be perfect in the world of the Crawley’s, at least for the moment. After a visit in Scotland with cousins Shrimpie and Lady Flintshire, Mary decides to go home early, but she insists that Matthew stay behind. As soon as she gets off the train, Anna accompanies Mary straight to the hospital as she goes into early labor. A few hours later, a strapping baby boy is born, which is the heir that will save Downton.

The family is ecstatic about the news and heads back home. Matthew meets his son for the first time. You can’t help but rejoice with the guy. Matthew and Mary’s love story has come full circle on "Downton Abbey.". They are truly happy as seen in their conversation. Matthew loves his wife unconditionally, even when she declares in her own 'Lady Mary' way, "Just think, we've done our duty. Downton is safe.” Matthew and Mary's very last conversation, and the one that says the most about their true love story, goes like this.

"You are going to be such a wonderful mother," Matthew gushes to his lady. "You're such a wonderful woman."

"I hope I'm allowed to be your Mary Crawley for all eternity," Mary says, not knowing just how fitting this is.

"You'll be my Mary always. Because mine is the true Mary," Matthew tells her.

He adds, "Right now, I want to tell you that I fall more in love with you every day that passes." Matthew then gives his Lady Mary a kiss before they depart.

Of course, he rushes off in his car back to Downton, happy as any new father can be, but the happiness ends right there. Matthew is gone in a car crash and now Lady Mary will spend season four trying to pick up the pieces of losing the love of her life and raising the heir that Matthew loved so much. Mary has not only given us a new Crawley baby to love, but she and Matthew have also given fans a British love story to always remember.
