Pasadenans who have been holding their breath until the new season of Downton Abbey comes to PBS can get their fix at the Pasadena Central Library throughout the month of January, 2013.
In conjunction with Pasadena Museum of History, the Pasadena Central Library is displaying more than 30 items from the Pasadena Museum of History Costume and Textile Collection in the north entry, including hats, gloves, purses and shoes. A book display and pages from Art Deco magazines that cover historic events from the first two seasons of the Downton Abbey series are on view in the main entrance hall.
Pasadena Central Library is located at 285 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena; phone, (626) 744-4066. The exhibit is free and can be viewed during regular library hours of Sunday, 1-5 p.m.; Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
With at least one wedding scheduled for the Downton Abbey characters in the third season, the Pasadena Museum of History is opening a new exhibit, “I Do! I Do! Pasadena Ties the Knot,” featuring vintage wedding gowns.
Part One has a Valentine’s Day opening on Feb. 14, 2013 and is on display through July 14. More than 35 bridal gowns from 1850 to 1950 will be on exhibit, along with the stories of the weddings, announcements, guest books and portraits. The gowns evolved from simply being the woman’s best dress—and not always white—to the hourglass 1950s creation. Dresses include the 1880 dress worn at the wedding of early Pasadena settlers Jennie Hollingsworth and Joshua Giddings, the 1901 gown of the niece of Gov. Henry Harrison Markham, and several intricately beaded knee-length wedding dresses from the 1920s.
Part Two continues the story up to the present day, and will be on view Aug. 2 through Oct. 20, 2013.
The Costume and Textile Collection contains about 3,000 pieces from 1850 to 1970, with the majority dating between 1880 and 1920. The collection can be viewed only when on display or by appointment.
The Pasadena Museum of History is located at 470 W. Walnut St., Pasadena; phone (626) 577-1660 ext. 10. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Tickets are $7 for general admission, and $6 for students and seniors. Members, children under 12, and active duty military personnel and their families are free. “Community Wednesdays” offers free admission every Wednesday to anyone who lives, works or is a student in Pasadena and neighboring communities.
