A homeschool mom has created a fun new math book that uses creative techniques to help simplify math for children, and she's offering a 61-page sample of it free.
The author, Candace Smothers, says:
Like many of you, I have spent years teaching my children. It became apparent to me that unique and creative approaches are needed for providing students with strategies and techniques that enable them to not only enjoy learning, but to excel in foundational mathematics.
My book (1st-6th grades) implements techniques such as left to right multiplication, the Austrian subtraction algorithm, a dot method in multiplication to aid in place value calculation and many other exciting new tools necessary to become proficient in math. Teachers and students alike will benefit from the detailed descriptions, examples, and step-by-step instructions provided, as well as drills, word problems and fun games!
The book is a printable e-book in PDF format. The free sample (61 pages and 32 MB) includes:
- Cover page for Teacher
- Student and Drill Book
- Tables of Contents
- Description of the Efficient Addition Algorithm
- Work pages & Answer pages for single column addition as well as some drills (and answers) and a checking method
All the pages are black and white except the covers which are in color.
The author says you are welcome and encouraged to send it to as many people as possible.
You can visit MathSharp to purchase the curriculum, which includes:
- A student edition ($6.99)
- A teacher edition ($12.99)
- A drill book ($4.99)
- All three of the above, plus a bonus packet with games ($24.97)
I have not read the books, but the sample I saw looked very intriguing. If I have a chance to review the book, I'll post the review in this column.
