The Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas, DSACT, is hosting its 14th Annual Buddy Walk at Reunion Ranch in Georgetown. Reunion Ranch is located at 850 CR 255. The Buddy Walk is on Saturday, October 27 from 12 to 4 p.m. DSACT provides education, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome and their families in Central Texas.
The event is held in conjunction with more than 250 other Buddy Walks across the nation. It serves as DSACT’s most important annual fundraiser, and offers the entire Central Texas community a fun family event with multiple attractions. Reunion Ranch offers miniature golf, covered wagon rides, pony rides, a lake with paddle boats, volleyball, basketball, and softball.
The Buddy Walk event will feature visits from a Travis County STAR Flight helicopter and a fire truck. An Elvis tribute show featuring Randy Hinson is planned as well as a martial arts demonstration. Cheerleading and drill teams from Cedar Park High School and The Cheer Station are scheduled to perform. Lunch is also provided for all registered participants.
“Buddy Walk is so much more than the name suggests,” said Lisa Apfelberg, director of this year’s Buddy Walk. “It raises funds that helps DSACT offer support and education to people with Down syndrome and their families throughout the year, but it’s also an affordable, one-of-a-kind family event for everyone in the community. The walking and fundraising is an important component of the event, but at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity to contribute to a great cause and enjoy a fantastic afternoon with all kinds of families.”
According to the National Down Syndrome Society, the National Buddy Walk Program welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, and was created to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to positively influence local and national policy and practice. Last year, Buddy Walk events across the United States raised more than $11.75 million in support of national advocacy initiatives and local programs and services.
Lisa Apfelberg, Buddy Walk coordinator stated that the 14th annual Buddy Walk for Central Texas has grown from two dozen people fourteen years ago to 2000 people this year. Lisa said, "It's super easy to get involved and be a team captain. All you need to do is to sign up at the site. The automated sign up walks you through the steps to setting up your team and provides you with emails to send to your friends and family. You can customize it with a picture and tell your personal story of and connection to Down syndrome. If you don't have access to doing it online, you can fill out one of our forms and mail it to us and we will do it for you. If you want to help out as an individual, you can register at the same site and walk as an individual. You get to come out and experience the great day that it is filled with joyful kids and families and tons of incredible activities."
DSACT is looking for volunteers to help us make the event run smoothly. You can sign up to volunteer by emailing email@example.com. Registrants for the event can either form teams or register as individual participants. The pre-event registration fee is $20 for participants age 12 and older and $5 for participants under 12. Pre-registration online guarantees lunch and a T-shirt in each registrant’s preferred size. Online registration is available on the DSACT website at dsact.com/buddywalk. Examiner created a team which you can join by visiting the Rebecca and Friends' Buddy Walk team profile page.
