Down 2 Earth, a three part group hailing from the Bay Area first heard together on Iamsu's Kilt 2 (Deluxe Edition), are making their surge towards 'need to know' artists in hip hop's music scene. By combining the resumes of the Heartbreak Gang (HBK) and CaliMade, these three emcees have the pedigrees to make a giant splash in hip hop music with their first project Wildfire.
Down 2 Earth, comprised of HBK's Azure, as well as CaliMade members Clyde Shankle and Dayvid Michael, have been working together for about a year and this project is their first project release together as a group. The trio dropped their song 'Sugie' yesterday and after the first listen, it is apparent that these guys are on to something.
'Sugie' is the first single off the artists collaborative effort Wildfire, and this soulful track pays homage to hip hop's past while delivering contemporary industry caliber lyricism. The song, which is performed and produced by Down 2 Earth, shows the full breadth of talent from the artists. These guys can rap, but they are also a group of producers. This first release is a very vibey track, with relate-able content that adequately contributes to this track's 'cool' summer vibe. The artists do not spare anything in the wordplay department and infuse some self-awareness and creative brilliance into each verse.
As more releases from the album Wildfire continue to trickle in, it will be interesting to see what else Down 2 Earth has cooked up for their growing fan base. 'Sugie' is a breath of fresh air compared to the more aggressive and negative tones that saturate hip hop and urban music. By going against the grain and creating their own sound, Down 2 Earth looks to become an integral part of hip hop's evolution.
