Perris, CA – Although their ages are quite a few decades apart, Bruce Douglass and Trent Williams have something in common. They scored season opening wins last Saturday night in the Senior and Young Gun Sprint Car races in the Sokola Shootout at Perris Auto Speedway.
Things looked bleak for Douglass, 62, of Ventura, California, after his heat race. Another car spun in front of him leaving him nowhere to go. Douglass plowed into the stopped car and by the time it was all over, the front wheels on the Victor Davis owned Lucas Oil #13 were aimed in different directions.
As soon as Douglass’ car was dropped off in his pit area by the hook, the crew jumped on it to get it repaired and ready for the 20-lap main event. By the time the green was ready to fly on the starting field comprised of 13 drivers age 45 and over, Douglass was in his car and starting 12th. The 2012 PAS Senior Sprint Car champion methodically worked his way through the field and took the lead from Corona’s Steve Brown on lap nine and drove the last 11 circuits for his first 2014 PAS win. Brown, a second year driver who raced at the Chili Bowl in January, stayed in second for the duration with the “Calgary Flame, Royal Adderson, a native of Calgary, third. Ed Schwarz of Santa Fe Springs and Santa Inez’ Bob Alderman rounded out the top five.
2011 Senior champion Bill Badger of Santa Clarita and defending champ Rick Hendrix of Palmdale both dropped out of the main early with mechanical problems. Todd Boy got upside down early in the main in turn four. The 49-year-old Huntington Beach driver got out of the car under his own power. but did spend a brief time in the ambulance for observation.
For Williams, who just turned 17 in February, it was his first ever main event win in a sprint car. Starting on the outside of the front row, the Victorville, California resident led every inch of the way in the 15-lapper in the #52 Rich Howell Racing/Victory Racecars/NNJFI Properties #52. Always fast Parker Colston of Lake Elsinore finished second followed by Menifee’s Mikey Lovas, Mitchell Collins of Lake Forest, Holtville’s George Morris and Maylssa Young Oak Hills.
Alderman and Schwarz won the two eight-lap heat races for the Seniors and Colston won the six-lap Young Gun heat.
The Senior Sprints will return to action on April 12th at the So. Cal Sprint Car Spectacular along with the STP World of Outlaw and USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. The Young Guns will be back on May 3rd with the Senior, USAC/CRA and California Lightning Sprints.
