Double your drinking pleasure!
Unless you've been completely cut off from the Internet and your television for the last few weeks chances are you've heard of Hungrybear9562, also known as "The Double Rainbow Guy."
His video on YouTube defines the term "viral video." When I first stumbled across this interesting piece of work last week it was at a mere four million views. It has now been seen over 5.6 million times... and counting. Even mainstream network news and entertainment programs have latched on, showing it repeatedly to viewers sitting in front of the boob tube. It seems ole Hungry Bear has touched something - or more likely taken something - that transcends boundaries.
With the proliferation of YouTube and other social media websites anyone, anywhere, at any time, for any reason can become an overnight mega-sensation.
According to Hungry Bear's profile he's a photographer, multi-media artist, mixed martial artist, farmer, and mountain man living just outside Yosemite National Park. Back in January he shot video of a double rainbow that appeared outside his home in Yosemite. What follows can only be described as.... well, describing what takes place is like trying to describe the face of God, so instead - just watch it unfold in all its glory.
So what does it mean? It's anyone's guess really, but what we do know is that the American craft brewing community is both eccentric and eclectic. Even more so here in Colorado. Kind of like Hungry Bear himself. So leave it up to The Dreaded One (Jason Yester) from Trinity Brewing and John Schneider from Black Fox Brewing to team up for a double-the-fun collaboration based on this viral phenomena. Enter Double Rainbow Saison.
Below is the actual rough sketch of the label made by Jason and John. As you can see, this is a very tongue-in-cheek project, one I'm sure will turn out magnificently. We're talking about the Masters of Saisons after all.
Can you taste the rainbow?
The colorful ingredients of this intense brew are based on the colors of the rainbow.
- Blue - blue corn and blue agave (both fermentables)
- Purple - purple malt (fermentable) and wine grapes (fermentable and flavor)
- Red - saffron and rose hips for flavor
- Orange - pumpkin (fermentable and texture) and tangerine zest for flavor
- Yellow - tumeric for flavor and honey (fermentable)
- Green - green peppercorns and parsley for flavor
They plan on starting the brewing process in the next few weeks. And when will this tasty treat be ready for imbibing? Each year Jason hosts a pre-Great American Beer Festival party at Trinity the day before the event starts. This year it will be on Wednesday, September 15, and that's when Double Rainbow Saison will make its debut. Jason and John have already contacted the source of their inspiration to see if he could be on hand for the launch party, and based on early reports there's a very good chance that the legend known as Double Rainbow Guy will in fact make an appearance.

We'll be covering this over on Beer Tap TV, from the brewing process through to the launch party, and if DRG does show up we'll be sure to get an interview with him and the guys. It should be... interesting! ;)
Got to try this last night when someone from Portland who moved to Colorado Springs came back and shared this and I was lucky enough to sit in on the session (wrong word considering most were very strong beers). It was a lot of fun. Wish I had another. Hope you got to try it.
