Born in South Korea and raised in Northern California, filmmaker Jules Suo believes in making films not merely for entertainment but that are potent tools for discourse.
Suo has launched a Kickstarter campaign (check it out at http://kck.st/16Od8is ) for her first feature film "Dosi" which tells three different interwoven stories whose main characters lives are interconnected.
She recently answered a few questions about the film.
What inspired you to create this project?
I was inspired by an article I read in the New York Times about Moussa Magassa, an African immigrant cab driver, who had lost his children to a horrible fire in the Bronx. I grew up in a very multicultural society in Northern California and also living in New York City. The people that I've met over the years all have been a real inspiration to me in writing this story.
Tell us about your film project.
The story is about three different lives from various backgrounds who all live in New York City. Nari is a working actress from Korea who represents a lot of New Yorkers who are selfish and don’t care about what is going on around her surroundings until she is confronted by it head on. Ahmed is a hardworking traditional family man. He works as a cab driver to support his family back in Egypt during the height of the Egyptian uprising. Julian is a average teenager who happens to be a top swimmer in his high school. He has big dreams and aspirations for his mother and sister.
How is your film going to be different from all the other indie projects out there seeking financing?
I’m proud to say that Dosi will break new ground as it will be the first feature film that will combine Korean and American cinema shot in New York City. The characters are all very relatable. It doesn’t matter what culture or background, the characters are everyday people with everyday problems. Ahmed, Julian and Nari represent a lot of people that are under represented in the indie film world in New York. Stylistically, the use of different camera angles, and shots, and a unique editing style. Dosi will introduce a whole new storytelling genre.
