Dorian Electra Interview: Libertarian at heart, Part 2

In Part 1 of this Libertarian News Examiner exclusive interview teenage singing-songwriting video-performing college-studying online prodigy Dorian Electra talked about her thoughts on libertarianism, voluntaryism, politics and the wider freedom philosophy.

In Part 2 Electra offers intelligent and insightful answers into her personal life as it relates to libertarianism, her music and video career and her reactions to public perceptions.

Please tell us more about yourself as it relates to libertarianism.

"I was raised in a very open, liberal family and still very much identify with the compassionate liberal ethos and commitment to improving the quality of life for all peoples (something I think is reflected in both classical liberal and modern liberal traditions).

"I view social entrepreneurship, voluntary institutions, mutual aid, and community networks as being among the most effective means of promoting this end. I also think many government programs can be effective, but my leanings towards private initiatives would tend to put me closer to the libertarian camp than most modern liberals."

Are you aware of some of your detractors? What have your reactions been?

"Reading the Gawker article was a little upsetting (especially the critique of my poor rapping skills ... haha) but I ultimately became grateful for it. I realized that even though this was an extremely non-charitable interpretation of my work, it was nonetheless a good insight into how I could be viewed by some people. It made me realize that I need to do a much better job of communicating who I really am and what I’m really all about (e.g. NOT some rich libertarian’s pawn, or part of some larger conspiracy to make 'right wing ideology hipster-friendly').

"On the whole, I think it’s a very entertaining article to read so I commend Ms. Tkacik for that. Also, I was flattered that she mistakenly thought my videos were big-budget productions. Each video she cited was made without a budget with the help of my friends (who already owned a video-camera)."

"Julie Ershadi, author of The College Fix article, 'Libertarian Rock Star Dorian Electra Isn’t a Libertarian,' is not a detractor. I told her in a brief in-person interview that I didn't call myself a libertarian anymore, but we didn't have time to discuss it in detail. She chose to make that the headline of the article anyway, which is why I'm talking to you right now. LOL."
