Doors guitarist Robby Krieger edges toward Pacquiao

A few golfers strolled past a group of reporters during Saturday’s round of the Bob Hope Classic golf tournament.

It took a second and third look to realize that one of those golfers was legendary rock guitarist Robby Krieger of Doors fame.

It was a surprise visit by Krieger, who was armed in typical golf attire. Krieger was a last minute replacement and enjoyed his round on the Palmer Private Course at PGA West in the City of La Quinta, CA, near Palm Springs.

Krieger took part in a small Hope concert the night before and arrived after a two-gig effort in San Diego.

He is a lifelong golfer.

“I’ve been playing for years,” Krieger said. “My dad taught me when I was a kid.”

Krieger, author of Doors anthems “Light My Fire,” “Love Me Two Times,” and “Love Her Madly,” is enjoying the moment. His seventh studio album, “Singularity,” has been nominated for a Grammy in the ‘Best Pop Instrumental Album’ category.

He appreciates today’s technology but said it would have made things hard when he and Jim Morrison were making music.

“It would have made us much worse,” Krieger said. “I don’t think technology has made music better. It has made it worse. People don’t have to practice their art so much.”

Krieger is a boxing fan. And, as it turns out, that makes him a Manny Pacquiao fan.

“I think Pacquiao would beat him,” Krieger said of Pacquiao’s proposed bout with Floyd Mayweather. “I’d like to see the fight happen. I don’t know why it hasn’t. Is one guy ducking the other? I don’t know.”
