Door kills girl: 3-year-old girl crushed, killed by metal door at ice cream shop

A door kills a girl when a "fun" trip to an ice cream shop turned terribly tragic. The incident happened at Rita's Water Ice store in north Philadelphia about 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. According to Yahoo! News, a metal security door fell on top of the 3-year-old girl, crushing her to death. Police say that the door somehow came loose and fell. Many people didn't know exactly what happened at first. Witnesses say that the noise was so loud, it sounded like a gunshot.

Witness Tracey Standford said:

"We saw the awning laying on the ground but didn't realize there was a baby under the awning until the mother started screaming."

The door that killed the girl wasn't in an area where it shouldn't have been, and there were not an violations against the store. However, there is an investigation pending, and authorities hope that they are able to identify what happened to ensure that it never happens again.

Rita's spokeswoman Linda Duke said:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the child's family. Due to the current investigation we really cannot comment about the unfortunate incident."

Right after the grated door fell, several people rushed over to try and help the girl who was trapped underneath. At least one bystander performed CPR on the child, but it was too late. Her injuries were far too serious. Her exact cause of death is unclear, but many suspect "blunt force trauma" to be listed by the medical examiner.

Many hope that the little girl's family finds comfort some how. More details in the video above.
