Donovan with 134 goals tied for the top spot and surged past Jamie Moreno who's currently in second place with 133 goals.
Zardes also chipped in with a goal of his own in the 26th minute on scramble tot he left that confused the Chivas defense and Mario De Luna.
"I felt like De Luna was inviting me down the line, so I took it," Zardes said. "I'll do my best to keep playing well so Donovan can break even more records."
In the 23rd minute Donovan scored on a brilliant pass from Zardes and later tied the goal record with another goal in the 41st minute. Donovan sprinted past Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy for the score.
The second half continued to be dominate by the Galaxy by confusing the Chivas defense even more on various match up and sets throughout the game.
Keane scored a goal in the 90th minute stoppage time period for the 5-0 victory as Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo picked up his third shutout of the season.
"The way we started until the end was very professional, very dominating," said Keane. "It's a great achievement for anybody to score that many goals. He was good."
The Galaxy won SuperClasico for the sixth straight year against Chivas USA.
Omar Gonzalez was absent from the second half due to a strained groin muscle injury.
Gonzalez along with Donovan were selected for the US Men's Soccer World Cup Qualifier on Friday night in Kansas City.
"It's just something I've been dealing with for a long time now, and it's something I can get over," said Gonzalez. "I'll be there no matter what my status is."
The Galaxy picked up the victory without their coach and GM Bruce Arena, who received a one game suspension from the MLS due to leaving the technical area to protest a call against Portland.
The Associate head coach Dave Sarachan ran the show in Arena's absence.
Donovan spoke more about the record and what it meant to him, "if this had happened earlier in my career, I would have thought about it more. But we're in a playoff race right now, so for us, it's about winning. But at halftime, it hit me, and I realized it."
