'Donkey Kong Returns 3D' coming to 3DS this summer (Photos)

It's on like Donkey Kong this summer on the 3DS, according to an announcement during Thursday's Nintendo Direct presentation.

"Donkey Kong Returns 3D" will hit Nintendo's handheld some time this summer. The title is a 3D remake "Donkey Kong Country Returns," Retro Studios' reboot of the classic mascot platformer. The 2010 Wii title was one of the best games released for the system, despite being hamstrung by awful motion controls that could make later levels difficult to manage. But when played with a classic controller, it was easily one of the best platformers released in the last 20 years -- even surpassing Rareware's "Donkey Kong Country" series on the SNES.

No further details were given in the announcement. Nintendo is no stranger to porting older games to its handhelds. Each console's mainline "Mario" games were ported to the next-generation handheld in the past. The 3DS also has its fair share of ports, including "The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D" and "StarFox 64 3D."

A 3D video of "Donkey Kong Returns 3D" will be up on Nintendo's eShop later today.
