Wii U owners need not look any further for the next must-have game to add to their library. Tomorrow a new Donkey Kong Country title will be available for purchase. Called Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, the game can be bought traditionally at any retailer that sells video games or via download on the Nintendo eShop right from the Wii U's menu.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze continues to follow the story of Donkey Kong and his pal Diddy after the events that took place in the previous Wii game, Donkey Kong Country Returns. This time the story revolves around a group of Viking animals known as the Snowmads that have traveled to Donkey Kong Island, encased it in ice and taken it over. Players must take control of Donkey and Diddy once more to vanquish their foes and reclaim the island which is rightfully theirs.
The biggest draw to this game besides the promise of new and exciting levels to play and conquer is the ability to play as two new characters. Dixie Kong makes another appearance as a playable character (the first time since '96's Donkey Kong Country 3), while Kranky Kong (Donkey's crotchety father) makes his first appearance as a playable character ever.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze can be played by either one or two players, but no matter what way you decide to play there will always be two kongs used. Donkey Kong will always be one of the characters, while a second kong will serve as a partner to Donkey. If you decide to play single player, you take control of both characters, while two player mode will have each of the players controlling a kong at the same time. Depending on which kong you choose as your partner gives you different abilities that will help Donkey Kong get through each stage.
Diddy is equipped with his trusty jetpack (the same one found in Donkey Kong Country returns) and allows him to hover for a couple of seconds and reach faraway platforms. Dixie has her long yellow ponytail which serves as a propeller to float her upward. Kranky has his walking cane, which he could bounce on to jump over enemies and to land on spiky surfaces safely.
Once thing's for certain, no matter what partner you pick to help get you through a level, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze will be no picnic to beat. The game was designed to be very difficult and video game editors playtesting it have died countless times trying to get through certain levels.
I'm always a fan of a good challenge and I cannot wait until the game is sold in stores tomorrow. It's the perfect option for fans of the original Donkey Kong Country, or those gamers just looking for a brutally difficult new platformer to play.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze was published by Nintendo and developed by Retro Studios, the same masterminds that brought us the Metroid Prime series. It will be available for purchase starting tomorrow, February 21, and will cost $49.99. The game is rated E for Everyone and has mild cartoon violence. Look for it tomorrow!
