'Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D' coming in May for Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo announced the released of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D for the Nintendo 3DS on Friday. The remake of the hit 2010 Wii title will be coming to the handheld on May 24 in North America and Europe.

The release date announcement for Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D was made solely with the image above distributed via social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Nintendo originally announced that the game was coming to the Nintendo 3DS during a Nintendo Direct presentation on Feb. 14. The title was originally developed by Retro Studios but the handheld port is actually a complete remake of the original from the ground up with the work being handled by Monster Games. It previously developed the 3DS launch title, Pilotwing Resort.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D stars Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong on a quest to save their island and bananas from the Tiki Tak Tribe who has hynpnotized the island's inhabitants with their music. The duo travel through eight different game worlds - the Jungle, the Beach, the Ruins, the Cave, the Forest, the Cliff, the Factory, and the Volcano - to defeat each of the tribal leaders, free their friends and get back their bananas.
