If you were not able to visit Mexico this summer, the next best thing is an evening at Doneraki's Mexican Restaurant in Gulfgate Mall, with fine food and live entertainment weekly. But Monday August 26th was an amazing cultural experience as the restaurant celebrated its 40th anniversary with free food and happy hour prices for drinks.
Long time friends and newcomers converged at Doneraki's Mexican Restaurant in Gulfgate Mall from 5:00 PM on to join in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the business. With free tortillas, the range of sauces from “mild” to “very spicy,” Margaritas and beer for $3, and some of Houston's best Latino musicians on stage, spontaneous dancing guests, and fantastic professional service, it would be hard to imagine a better party.
Cesar Rodriguez, owner of Doneraki's, along with many of his family members were the gracious hosts that have made them a beloved part of the Houston restaurant scene for years. The restaurant interior and covered terrace were filled to capacity, with a decorative cake and traditional Mariachi band inside, and popular band, soloists, and dancers outside. Guests seemed not to notice the few light sprinkles of rain.
As guests came and went from table to table and I practiced my limited Spanish, it took a few minutes for me to realize I had met nearly a half-dozen State Representatives, City Council candidates, senior staff members in municipal positions, and marketing managers of major stores. But the party was not about politics, campaigns, or business. All mixed and mingled to lively music and friendly smiles.
