For what? For school supplies, that’s what.
The Backpack Ministry is at that point where some monetary donations and donations in kind are needed to meet the needs of these local children.
This year 99 children have been registered for assistance with a few stragglers expected. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church would love to fill each child’s backpack with all the supplies needed.
The church has all the money needed to do this, except that some of it is still in the pockets and checking accounts of community members who have been blessed with financial abundance. Yes, that means that this fantastic program could use several more donations.
Now is the time for the community to respond to this need. The average cost of supplies for a single child is about $50. With the numbers already signed up, that brings the amount of help needed to $5,000. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Ministerial Alliance, and some individuals have already committed $2,000. That brings the need down to $3,000.
That sounds like a lot but many donations can quickly reduce this to zero.
The church and the program volunteers are making a request for donations to help those children in our community who might otherwise start the school year with little in the way of required supplies.
There is the side of us that says, “Their parents would have enough money for school supplies if they didn’t spend it all on beer or cigarettes or designer clothes or fast food or video games.”
Those things might be true, but the children are not responsible for those bad decisions. Equipping these children for school gives them a chance to overcome a family history of bad decision making through success in education.
Some folks are just doing the best that they can and just can’t afford the supplies.
And some have been blessed to have an abundance. If this is you, then please donate to help children in this community with school supplies.
Exceptional stewardship is the norm with every dollar received. Those who purchase the supplies have a keen eye for bargains and have been purchasing some supplies in the “off season” when the prices are significantly reduced. Their comparison shopping stretches every donation to the maximum extent.
The Cumberland Presbyterian Church is once again sponsoring this ministry, so please make checks to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church or CPC and place “Backpacks” or “School Supplies” in the “for” line of the check.
