Donatell expected to be named Eagles defensive coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to hire Ed Donatell as their new defensive coordinator.

Donatell has been with the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive backs coach the past two seasons. He has previous defensive coordinator experience, as he was the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator in 2004 through 2006 and the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator in 2000 through 2003.

He would replace Todd Bowles, who recently accepted the defensive coordinator position with the Arizona Cardinals. He took over the defensive coordinator position after Juan Castillo was fired in October.

The Eagles cannot officially hire him until after the Super Bowl. The 49ers face the Baltimore Ravens in two weeks in New Orleans for this year's Championship.

He hasn't been a defensive coordinator since the 2006 season in the NFL. But he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington in 2008.

It is believed that new Eagles head coach Chip Kelly would like to install the 3-4 defense. But Donatell is known for using the 4-3 scheme.
