It is easy to get overwhelmed by Christmas. The holiday beginning gets pushed earlier and earlier, the pressure to buy and spend can drown out any attempt to find any sort of meaning or satisfaction, and all the influences can push you away from the people whom you would choose to spend the time you've set aside. There is no simple formula. It is too easy to throw your hands up and walk away to wait until all the pomp and circumstance has worn itself out somewhere after the first of the year. In order to find meaning and enjoyment we all need to shift our focus. Find someone or something to devote your time and energy, and make it count. One of the sharpest critiques of the season is it's fleeting nature, why be so compassionate and giving for just one day out of the year, only to let the remaining 364 to be the greedy slob we all become as time progresses. Make a commitment to something or someone and carry it through year round. There is some much that all of us can do, and no one expects that after the three ghosts visit you this Christmas Eve you must make as miraculous transformation as Ebeneezer Scrooge, just start small, and see where it takes you. All anyone needs is your time. Sometimes its is asking to too much to give money this season, and money can only do so much. But your time is priceless. A lonely person with nothing to do and nowhere to go would be infinitely grateful, maybe not so much in the beginning, but if both have open minds there is no telling where the circumstance will end up, and if the worst thing that develops is a friend for life, then you've done your duty this season.
