If New York businessman Donald Trump ever develops true presidential ambition, he will have a tough time getting either major political party behind him, according to a poll released Tuesday by Public Policy Polling.

Not only to members of the major parties have an unfavorable impression of Trump, the survey found, but independent voters don't care for him, either.

Not surprisingly, Democrats are the least impressed with Trump. The survey shows 82 percent of Democrats have an unfavorable of him, only 10 percent have a favorable opinion of him and eight percent are undecided.

More Republicans have unfavorable views of Trump, the poll found, with 41 percent holding an unfavorable opinion of him, 37 percent of the GOP have a favorable view of Trump and 22 percent are undecided.

Only 19 percent of independent voters have a favorable opinion of Trump, the survey said, while 58 percent view him unfavorably and 23 percent are not sure.

Overall, only 22 percent of American voters have a favorable impression of Trump, 61 percent view him unfavorably and 17 percent are undecided.

In recent years, Trump has aligned himself with several Republicans and endorsed the GOP's Mitt Romney for president in 2012.

Historically, however, Trump has been all over the political landscape, flirting with Democrats, the Reform Party and an independent candidacy, in addition to affiliating himself with Republicans.
