Earlier today Donald Trump tweeted his outrage about the lack of media coverage concerning the gang related killing of Chris Lane. In a subsequent tweet he said: "I wonder where Al Sharpton or anyone for that matter is after the murder in Duncan, Oklahoma. Where is the anger?"
Christopher Lane played baseball at East Central University in Ada which is 85 miles east of Duncan. He had been visiting his girlfriend and her parents in Duncan after he and his girlfriend returned to the U.S. from Australia about a week ago. At the time of his murder he was jogging when a car approached him from behind and he was shot in the back. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died as a result of his wound.
The question Trump originally asked before interjecting the name of Al Sharpton was, "Why isn't mainstream media all over this like the Trayvon Martin story? Will there be justice for Chris Lane?" Donald Trump who has teased the public for several years as being a possible presidential candidate also credits himself as being the person responsible for getting President Barack Obama to produce his long form birth certificate.
Trump in a not so subtle way is attempting to draw some parallel between the murder of Chris Lane and Trayvon Martin. It is no secret that Al Sharpton became involved in the George Zimmerman case at the request of Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin. According to the attorney for the Martin family who had worked with Sharpton previously, the Sanford Police Dept. was not forth coming with information in regards to the murder of Trayvon Martin.
The justice that Trump called for in his tweet is all that the Martin family was seeking. To contrast that fact with this recent killing of Chris Lane demands that a few basic facts be pointed out first. Donald Trump has 2.5 million followers on Twitter not to mention the coverage he gets from sources who do not follow him. The absurdity of a so-called billionaire stoking the flames of racial tension for no apparent purpose is only "Trumped" by his absurdity in demanding to see the president's birth certificate.
Unlike the killer of Trayvon Martin the killers of Chris Lane were arrested. Not only were they arrested they are still in custody. Not only are they in custody they are being held under $1 million bail each and will be tried as adults. Despite news coverage stating that 3 black youth committed this killing it turned out that one of the culprits was Caucasian. When asked why they did this crime one of them stated, "We were bored." Not one penny has been raised to aid in their defense nor has anyone suggested that Chris Lane, "Got what he deserved." Unlike George Zimmerman who became some sort of a folk hero for killing a teenage boy armed with a bag containing some Skittles and a can of ice tea in one hand and a concrete sidewalk in the other.
As of the publishing of this article there is no evidence that the parents of James Edwards 15, Chancey Luna 16 or Michael Jones 17 have made a request for Al Sharpton do do anything for them. Nor has the parents of Chris Lane requested his help either. Why demand an arrest when the killers are already in custody? Why would you call for justice when the wheels of justice are already in motion? Why would Donald Trump interject the name of Al Sharpton into a tweet that has nothing to do with Al Sharpton?
I realize that those are all rhetorical questions because nobody has been able to figure out as of yet why Donald Trump wanted to see the president's birth certificate. If he really wants to draw a parallel about something, he can start with the fact that Ted Cruz says that he's qualified to run for president even though he was born in Canada. Cruz says his mother was born in Kansas therefore he's a naturalized citizen. We should collectively ask Donald Trump, "Where's the outrage? Where's the anger?"
