Donald Trump is being sued for $40 million, which happens to be about the amount of money his learning institution took in from "students" at the Trump University. Trump and his for-profit investment school is being sued by New York state's attorney general, who is accusing Trump and the people that run his school of engaging in illegal business practices, according to MSN News on Aug. 25.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman accuses the real estate mogul and the University that carries his name, which was the Trump University until 2010, of making false claims. He's accusing Trump of running a phony school promising as many as 5,000 students that enrolled at the school that the education they received would make them rich, but instead they got "useless seminars," according to the attorney general.
The people that enrolled in Trump's University thought that they would meet the man whose name is on their school. Instead they got their picture taken with a life-size cut out of Donald Trump. They were told that Trump hand-picked the teachers at this school, but according to the attorney general's office, Trump had nothing to do with finding or picking the instructors.
"Trump University" promised a solid curriculum in courses that would teach the students to get rich but instead they sat through expensive and mostly useless seminars. They also failed to deliver apprenticeships that were promised. As many as 5,000 students paid $35,000 each for a school that wasn't a licensed educational institution, claims the lawsuit.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said:
"No one, no matter how rich or popular they are, has a right to scam hard-working New Yorkers."
Schneiderman's office reports that the lawsuit is seeking restitution of at least $40 million, which is the estimated amount brought in from tuition. It is also requesting a disgorgement of profits, penalties and an injunction. Many of the students thought they were attending an actual university, but the school was unlicensed.
Trump, who never seems to let anyone rattle him tweeted:
"Lightweight NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is trying to extort me with a civil law suit."
The tweet also offered up a link that conveyed, "Trump University has a 98 percent approval rating." It will probably take much more than this to get Donald Trump to break a sweat with worry!
