The Old Post Office Pavilion will be undergoing some major changes in the forthcoming years. Donald Trump, TV personality and successful business entrepreneur, recently announced his intention to transform the Post Office into a luxury hotel.
The hotel will consist of about 270 guest rooms and suites with a range of 600 square feet. Much like his other hotels, Mr. Trump plans to create a glamorous and upscale environment with crystal chandeliers, large showcase windows, vaulted ceilings and an amazing combination of soft colors like Air Force blue, cream, gold, silver and hints of red sporadically. Other amenities will include a nine-story atrium with high-end restaurants and shops, spa, lounge, grand ballroom and a library. The cost for the entire renovation will be around $200 million.
Mr. Trump met with Mayor Vincent Gray, of D.C., who mentioned the lack of hotels in the nation’s capital for visitors and tourists weighed heavily on this decision. The district has a huge market for hotels. Additionally, the opportunity to capitalize on an exceptionally historical property was not a second guess for Mr. Trump.
Originating in 1899, the Old Post Office Pavilion was the first government building to house its own electric power plant. It was also the tallest office building and first to be located on Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C. The building is recognized for its 315 foot Clock Tower, which daily tours are provided to see the attraction.
Also among its possessions are the official United States Bells of Congress, bicentennial bells that were ringed in celebration of the Revolution War’s ending. They were a legendary gift from England. If you listen closely, one can still hear the sounds of the Bells on Thursdays, but only if you’re in close proximity to the district.
Mr. Trump believes the historical features of the architecture are extraordinary, and he plans to maintain them as an intricate part of the edifice. Though, visitors can expect to see more modern designs around the place as a mere enhancement to its original statue.
Mr. Trump will be working on the project alongside his daughter, Ivanka. Construction is scheduled to begin during the spring of 2014-2015. Mr. Trump anticipates the project will create more jobs for construction workers and hotel staff, hence reducing the unemployment rate significantly in the metropolitan area.
