Donald Trump explains lawsuit: Maher 'crossed the line' by insulting parents

Donald Trump has sued Bill Maher for $5 million, over a "bet" that Maher allegedly made during an appearance on "The Tonight Show." On Tuesday, Trump explained the true reason behind the lawsuit: Maher crossed the line when he insulted Trump's parents.

Trump appeared on "TMZ Live" on Tuesday. He said that Maher's joke, which basically said Trump's mother was impregnated by an orangutan (more than basically, really), was too much to stand. He said he's confident he can win the lawsuit, despite many who said it was just a joke (which it appeared to be).

Earlier, Trump said he didn't believe that Maher was joking, telling "Fox and Friends" that the "venom" Maher used when he was on "The Tonight Show" implied he wasn't joking.

Trump said that he will follow through to the bitter end to defend the honor of his parents. He said:

What he said about my father is disgraceful ... and what he said about my mother, who's deceased, was in a certain way, even more disgraceful. I've never heard anything like that said about my parents ... who were truly great people.

The new feud began when Maher was explaining another feud with Trump. Speaking to Jay Leno, Maher said that “what got [Trump] so mad was, we did a new rule one week that, supposed that perhaps Donald Trump had been the spawn of his mother having sex with orangutan," [because] “the color of his hair and the color of an orange orangutan is only two things in nature of the same color.”

As part of the joking around, Maher made an offer: $5 million to the charity of Trump’s choice (Maher suggested the “Hair Club for Men” or the “Institute for Incorrigible Douchebaggery”) if Trump were to prove Maher’s hypothesis to be wrong.

One possible negative to Trump's suit if he were to take Maher's word at face value, which he appears to be doing. The “Institute for Incorrigible Douchebaggery” doesn't appear to exist, and "The Hair Club for Men" isn't a charity.
