For the most part, Nonito Donaire, Jr. and Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. have kept it clean and cordial and have exchanged complimentary and respectful words towards each other leading up to their WBO super bantamweight title showdown this weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
Count on Twitter to change all of that.
Without the filter of a publicist and the instantaneous nature of social media, seems like all the drama in boxing is happening on Twitter these days. What had seemed like a quiet and courtly pre-fight build-up, just got testy.
It all started when Vazquez's wife (@lyameraliz) called out Donaire (@filipinoflash) on Twitter regarding their open workouts today at the Jesse Leija Gym in San Antonio.
"@lyameraliz: @filipinoflash your scared! See you there!! #teamvazquezjr"
Of course, with the nature of social media, it didn't take long before fans jumped in on Vazquez's wife calling Donaire a coward.
Caught off guard, Donaire responded by writing, "@filipinoflash: lmao ok didnt know Vazquezs wife talks crap when @wv2 doesnt".
After she got a response from Donaire, Vazquez's wife then bragged to a friend on Twitter about what she had just done as other parties like Donaire's wife (@Knockout_Queen) and Wilfredo, Jr. (@WV2) himself jumped in the fray making for a snowball effect that's still ongoing as of this writing, several hours after it started.
Things just got ugly. Somewhere in between, Vazquez hurled expletives at Donaire as Donaire's wife Rachel came to her man's defense in what became a full-on "Twitter War".
"I don't know why she (Vazquez's wife) started talking chap, but if I did that on my own, Nonito would definitely get mad at me. Maybe they're trying to play mind games or something, maybe they're nervous, but it's just funny why she is talking all her junk in behalf of her man on Twitter. That's not how we do things. We'd rather say it to their faces if we have a problem with them," Rachel said Tuesday night on dBoxing Source Radio show after sharing updates on Nonito's camp.
I'll tell you this much, knowing Rachel's Taekwondo background and my own personal experiences with Puerto Rican women, I'd pay for that match-up to be on the main event. Forget Chavez vs. Rubio! Every boxing match-up can use a little drama (otherwise you would never have bothered to read this story), and I'm sure both parties will resolve this little spat sooner or later. Where better to do so that in the boxing?
Luckily, Saturday is just a few days away.

Writer's Note: Just make sure to remind HBO to keep an extra camera focused on ringside, because you never know when some 'Jerry Springer' action might just go down (lighten up, I'm kidding; just partially though with the Chavez vs. Rubio comment). Whatever you say about this drama, one thing's for sure. This fight just got a little bit more interesting.
