If Nonito Donaire Jr. was just looking to rattle the cashier's cage at Bob Arum's Las Vegas-based Top Rank Promotions office, he may have done so simply by his lawyer selection.
If, on the other hand, the 28 year old Fil-Am and two world title belt bantamweight champion plans to test his promotional contract with the company, that could be another reason the fighter tabbed veteran attorney John R. Bailey, who formed Bailey & Kennedy after toiling for 16 years at Nevada's biggest law firm, Lionel Sawyer & Collins.
In remarking to me Saturday night, that Bailey "is no ambulance chaser," New York licensed lawyer Arum damns with too faint praise.
Arum is well acquainted with the barrister,Bailey having been a commission and a onetime Chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Bailey focuses on corporate litgation, health care legal issues and gaming law. He's a former general counsel for the state's Republican Party and was recommended for a judgeship by both the last Bush Administration (U.S. Court of Appeals) and Nevada Senators John Ensign and Arum and Manny Pacquiao pal, Harry Reid (Ninth Circuit).
Arum also said he believes Bailey is "not fully informed" as to what he said is an existing, ongoing promotional contract.
Arum said his company had an option to push the deal into 2011, an option the promoter said was exercised last month.
Only time will tell if Donaire is just rattling his legal sword or plans to for what could be a costly, protracted legal fight against the 79 year old promoter.
Arum, as many know, is a lifelong Democrat.
