If you're a reality TV junkie, you probably had a chance to catch Bravo's Shahs of Sunset last night and if so, you saw Lilly Ghalichi go on a blind date. The beginning seems great, she gets flowers, they begin conversing, then you immediately see Lilly break a very important first date rule: Don't talk about your ex!
Lilly proceeds to describe her typical day-to-day activities which include, going to work, coming home, and talking to her ex-boyfriend. Yikes! This immediately turns her date off, as it would most men. No one wants to hear about your ex while on a first date with you.
There are various reasons why Lilly may have brought up her ex such as insecurity or nervousness, but as the date progresses, it's obvious where her attention is and it's not with her date.
When on a date, you need to be respectful of the person you're with. Most find it extremely rude when you are focusing on the person you used to date and not the person you could potentially be dating, right in front of you. Even if you don't find a connection with your date, there is no need to make them feel like they aren't worth your time, even if just for one date.
Talking about your ex on the first date, even if you no intention of getting back with them, still immediately sends the signal that you're not over them and it's hard to move into your future when your past is still present.
You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.Granted, a slip up may happen, and if it does, just change the subject. But if the entire topic of conversation is your ex, there is a good chance you are not ready to move on to the next. If this happens to you, this may be a good time to evaluate your situation before you go out with someone else.
