The wait is over and Bangkok food and wine connoisseurs are gearing up for “So Amazing Chefs 2014” which is one of the most eagerly anticipated culinary events of the year. This is the third year that the trendy Sofitel So Bangkok will bring together nine high profile chefs from around the world under one roof to take gourmands on an unforgettable gastronomic journey at the highest level. Scheduled to take place from Thursday 16 October to Sunday 19 October, 2014; this four-day epicurean showcase promises something for everyone. Food lovers can learn directly from these gourmet virtuosos through culinary and pastry cooking classes, and indulge in the series of chefs' dinners over several nights where they can experience signature dishes in a 4 to 8-course culinary journey complemented by exquisite wine pairings.

As in previous years, the highlight of the So Amazing Chefs event will be the So Amazing Chefs Culinary Showdown, which takes place on the evening of Friday 17 October 2014. After a welcome cocktail, guests will have the opportunity to watch all nine chefs in action at individual cooking stations as they go head-to-head in a friendly cook-off with Thai celebrity guest judges on hand to rate their efforts. After the competition, guests will also enjoy a three-course dinner as prepared by the chefs. Proceeds from the Culinary Showdown will be donated to the CCF Foundation under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn which helps underprivileged children.

“This is the third year we are staging the So Amazing Chefs event, and this one promises to be bigger and better than ever. Gastronomy is one of our great passions, and the event provides a perfect opportunity to be inspired by the talents of our guest chefs and highlight the richness of culinary arts in this city's urban tapestry,” stated Yves Mudry, General Manager of Sofitel So Bangkok.

  • Patrick Jeffroy (Brittany, France) Patrick draws on the sea and the earth of Brittany to create Breton gourmet cuisine that is simple and natural. His culinary flair has seen him maintain two Michelin stars at his namesake restaurant since 2002. He is also an award-winning 2011 seafood cookbook author, and member of the Grand Tables of the World as well as the Village de Chefs Association.
  • Stephane Bonnat (Voiron, France) Hailed by critics as the “encyclopedia of chocolate”, Stephane is the maître-chocolatier of Bonnat. Established in 1884 in Voiron, France, the family-run company is the longest established chocolaterie in the world. Bonnat's artisanal offerings include single-origin chocolates, some dating back to the Incan Empire. Stephane is also a member of the Village de Chefs Association.

The Australian native is also The Winning Challenger Chef of Iron Chef Thailand™ TV Programme in both 2012 and 2013.

Making their debut and adding to the high profile nature of this year's culinary celebrations are the following chefs:

  • Daniel Hebet (Avignon, France) A specialist in truffles, Daniel's passion for cooking was ignited at a young age by his love for travel when he also discovered the world of flavors. He is the chef-owner of Le Jardin du Quai, a one Michelin-starred restaurant in Provence where he showcases seasonal ingredients through refined, simple cooking.
  • Laurent Peugeot (Burgundy, France) Chef-restaurateur Laurent boasts no less than five culinary establishments that carry his name, including Le Charlemagne, a one Michelin-starred restaurant in his native France. His many years of experience in Japan are also evident in the culinary tradition and precision he uses to create his signature Japanese-French artistry. He is also a member of Chefs Nespresso HORECA.
  • Stephane Vieux (Tokyo, Japan) The creator of all things decadent, Stephane has been studying pastry and cuisine since the age of 15 and winner of the France Champion of Dessert Junior in 1998. Starting out at several Michelin-starred restaurants in his native France, followed by a stint in Bora Bora, he now runs pastry consultancy Sweets Secrets from his base in Japan.

The Cuisine and the Schedule:

I had the privilege of previewing some of the cuisine that will be available during this spectacular food event. Chef Paul Smart from the Sofitel So Bangkok created a playful and innovative Foie Gras Mousse w/ Truffle Mash Potato amuse bouche which proved to be a rich and creamy starter that was decadent and thoroughly satisfying. Next was the Marinated Raw Scallop w/ Seasonal Vegetables & Black Truffle Vinaigrette by Daniel Hebet. Light and refreshing, it is a highly accomplished offering of complementary flavors and textures. My favorite dish was the Cannon of Lamb w/ Gingerbread, Carrot Puree, Squid & Red Pepper Jus w/Garlic by Chef Patrick Jeffroy. This was perfection on a plate, and the lamb was amazingly juicy and tender. It literally melts in the mouth, and the sauces and accompanying carrot puree is an awe inspiring accomplishment of earthy elements that perfectly match the lamb. For dessert Chef Stephane Vieux created a light and refreshing Coconut Panna Cotta w/Mango Jelly and Mango & Passion Fruit Sorbet, while Chef Stephane Bonnat offered up a duo of French Chocolate Bon Bons which were simply divine.

What you can expect is world class cuisine at the highest level which is executed with skill and precision. You can get up close and meet the chefs as well as take part in several culinary options during the event. Below is a schedule of events:
