Don't miss the Alameda County Fair -- open until July 6th

Cool times at the Alameda County Fair
Sami Segale

It’s official – the 2014 Alameda County Fair is up and running, and youth and adults alike who have worked all year for this time couldn't be more excited.

This week in the Small Animals area, you can view open (not shown by youth organizations) rabbits, which have already been judged. Many breeds are on display and a good many are for sale at very reasonable prices in comparison to pet stores. If you have been thinking about getting a bunny, now is a good time, especially with so many from which to choose. Of course, do your homework first, because if you are welcoming a pet rabbit into your home, it is a ten-year commitment!

This week in the Livestock Barn, it is Breeding and Dairy Week, and you can see the best Alameda County has to offer in beef, goat, sheep and swine, culminating in a BBQ and Breeding Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 25th at 5:00 p.m.

Next week in the Small Animals area, dog obedience and showmanship are Tuesday, June 24th at 11 a.m. and rabbits and poultry are up for judging on Wednesday, June 25th at 9:00 a.m. Cavies will be judged Thursday, June 26th at 10 a.m. Some not-to-be-missed Small Animals events include the following:

Tuesday, June 24th 6 p.m. Rabbit, Poultry, and Cavy Bowls (knowledge contests between teams of

three youth)

Friday, June 27th 7 p.m. Rabbit, Poultry, Cavy, and Dog Awards Ceremony

Saturday, June 28th 11 a.m. Rabbit, Cavy, and Poultry Dress-up

2 p.m. Chicken Calling and “Sound Like your Cavy” Contests

The Livestock Barn is also alive with activity next week with the arrival of market beef, swine, sheep, and goat. This is a time to see the next generation of American farmers in action as they carry on the art of animal husbandry. Less than 1% of our population farms, and these kids are our future. Events for the week include the following:

Sunday, June 29th 6 p.m. Educational Demonstrations

Tuesday, July 1st 8 a.m. Market Swine Show

3 p.m. Market Beef Show

6 p.m. Sheep Lead

Wednesday, July 2nd 8 a.m. Market Goat Showmanship

11 a.m. Market Beef Showmanship

Sunday, July 6th 8:30 a.m. Junior Livestock Auction

The last week in the Small Animals area features open (not shown by youth organizations) poultry – chickens, turkey, and water fowl, to be judged on Tuesday, July 1st at 10 a.m. Pigeons will also be present, to be judged Thursday, July 3rd at 9 a.m.

The fair represents an entire year’s worth of work as well as the county’s best, not just in small animals and livestock, but in food, photography, and handicrafts as well. Whether you appreciate carnival rides, corn dogs, and a sunny summer’s day or not, the Alameda County Fair is not to be missed!
