Hailing from the Lone Star state, Sarah Jaffe bears a voice caked with a moody intensity that evokes dusky desert skies in the manner only an acoustic singer/songwriter can. However, with a curiosity for new instruments and experimentation each album since her debut EP has sort to broaden her sound.
Her debut album, “Suburban Nature” (2010) with its confessional tones found an audience through its most popular track, ‘Clementine’.
She followed up with her critically acclaimed sophomore album, “The Body Wins” (2012) which had an electro-pop edge that instantly updated her sound.
The fact that she started out working with producer, John Congleton who cut his teeth with St Vincent set her in good stead as an artist, encouraged from the beginning to push the boundaries beyond the usual folk-singer/songwriter mold.
Fierce in her want for experimentation she even teamed up with producer S1 who has worked with the likes of Kanye, Jay Z and Beyoncé – to release “Fool’s Gold” last year.
A hip-hop and reggae meets country collaboration, the track proves that these seemingly incongruous musical styles when in the right hands can work.
“Fool’s Gold’ was so much fun to write. My voice next to Raekwon’s still trips me out. I’m a massive fan of his so it was only right that we proceed and present our ideas through what we know as The Dividends,” said Jaffe.
Under the moniker, The Dividends, Jaffe’s first collaboration, “Bad Guy” ended up as the first track on Eminem’s MMLP2, which featured a chorus vocal from Jaffe.
But rather than sit around and wait to be the next Dido, she is forging ahead and looking forward to showcasing songs from her latest album. She is currently touring with the Polyphonic Spree till July 26, before heading back to Texas for her headline gig at the Majestic Theatre just in time for the launch of "Don't Disconnect". In September Jaffe will head back out on tour with alternative hip-hop artist, Astronautalis.
