Why am I so busy?
Here we’ve had two plays by the talented Stuart Bousel playing recently and I will have missed both of them – but you don’t have to.
If you didn’t catch his own “Tales of the City” meets “Sex in the City” aka “Edenities” like me, you still have a chance to catch “Juno En Victoria” playing through July 2 at Stage Werx at 533 Sutter near Powell.
“Victoria” takes place at an English country estate in the high Victorian era, the Goddesses Hera and Hestia are a pair of wealthy sisters semi-retired to pastoral bliss and boredom. The story revolves around the imminent marriage of Hebe, daughter of Zeus and Hera, to Heracles. Taking its cue from the novels of Austen, Forster, Waugh and Thackeray, “Victoria” is a new tragicomedy about the secret lives of Victorian women. Funny, sad, and ultimately haunting this period piece pays homage to the parlor dramas of a bygone era.
And don’t worry, according to out writer Bousel, there is a definite gay angle. He says,” ‘Victoria’ hinges on an affair between Zeus and his servant, Ganymede. The revelation of that affair is the central conflict of the show, as Hera finds a way to protect her family from a scandal that in the era the play is set, could literally cost them their home and livelihood and her husband his freedom.”
Three more chances – tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at 8pm.
Tickets are available at www.wilywestproductions.com. Tickets are also available at the Union Square Tix Booth – and sometimes they are half priced on the same day.
