The New Year is beginning and we all have made resolutions, right? And after the feasting during the holiday season, most of our New Year resolutions will be about losing weight. Do you realize how much weight loss organizations are going to make in the next two months? They are going to make mega bucks! Whenever people gain weight they panic and want to get rid of those extra pounds as soon as possible. Well the weight-loss industry knows all about those panicky feelings, and they see this as an opportune time to take advantage of as many people as they can.
Attractive quick weight-loss tactics
How many quick weight-loss advertisements have you seen on television over the holiday season? You have witnessed people giving testimonies about losing 40 pounds in 8 weeks or less. You have seen before and after pictures; with the after pictures showing dramatic physical changes with weight loss. And if you think these after pictures are hard to believe then you are right! Any quick weight-loss is a fad and weight lost that happens quickly is not going to stay off! Diets that promise a weight-loss more than 2 pounds per week are the pitfall to people gaining weight back. The quicker you lose the weight, the more likely your chances are of gaining that weight back.
We all know that losing weight is easier than keeping the weight off. Have you ever wondered why you lose weight and gain it back quickly? This loss and gain of weight is called diet-cycling, also known as yo-yo dieting. The reason this happensis because of homeostasis, the body's defense to maintain an equal energy balance in the body. Gradual weight loss does not shock and alarm the homeostatic status of your body. Therefore losing weight slowly is successful in keeping the weight off because it gradually resets your homeostasis status. Diet cycling is unhealthy and medical research has proven results that yo-yo dieting actually weakens one immune’s system; increasing their vulnerability to other diseases.
Three main ingredients to lose weight properly and permanently
1) Seek medical guidance
The most important thing to remember with losing weight is the importance of seeking medical guidance from your healthcare practitioner before beginning any weight-loss program. Remember, everyone is an individual! Therefore, each weight-loss plan should be one tailored specifically for you and you only.
2) Healthy low-calorie diet
A controlled caloric diet is a main ingredient to proper weight loss. It will also help keep the weight off because your weight loss with is will be reasonable. Most successful weight loss diets are 1500 calories or at the minimum 1200 calories daily. Beware of any diets that are less than 1200 calories daily! They are starvation diets and will force the body into a pre-starvation status. Starvation diets are never successful because they are impossible to maintain. They cause binge eating in the late afternoon or evening. They also slow your metabolism down as well as set you up for failure! These diets never work because the human body requires the proper amount of fuel to function properly. Also remember to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits! Vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates should be at the top of your list (turnip greens, artichokes, green peas, broccoli, apples, oranges, strawberries, and raspberries). Foods high in fiber take longer to eat, fill your stomach up sooner, and you end up eating less. Last, but no least. Don't forget to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Water flushes out your system as well as fills you up and helps reduce hunger pains! Don't forget to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits! 3) Develop an exercise program and maintain it!
The key to losing weight is to burning off calories that you have taken in. In order to lose weight we must eat less and move around more! That’s the bottom line and there is no way around it. When I hear weight-loss organizations advertise about losing weight quickly without exercising I get really concerned. This is because any weight-loss program that doesn’t require exercising sounds attractive to our society. This sounds so attractive because in our society we don’t feel like we have time to exercise. Well we may not feel that we have time to exercise but no matter how busy our schedule is we must take time to exercise; not just for weight-loss, but to maintain good health! Research studies have proven that people have heart attacks when they get older, not just because they are older but because they stop exercising as they age. So finding an exercise program to attend at least 3 times a week is beneficial to you in more ways than one. If you are someone who prefers to exercise at home there are numerous exercise videos available to help you do this as well.
