Don't leave home without...

Stuff you might need!  And a cell phone as last resort.  Photo by Mike Canestaro.

Hi folks, it's your local friendly cycling examiner here to tell you about everything that can go wrong!  And, it will...

Sometimes, it pays think worst-case scenario.  You should be prepared for the worst when you commute, or go for a long weekend training ride.  Else, you have to make that humbling "rescue call" from 35 miles out.  So, there's three back pockets on cycling jerseys for a good reason.  Fill them.  Here are must-bring items arranged by decreasing likelihood of catastrophe:

Flat tire:

You will flat.  Therefore, it's silly to not have a mini-pump or CO2 puffer, a new tube and a tire lever.  In case you have a problem with more than one tire, bring some patches, or fashion an im-promptu patch by wrapping some electrical tape around some of the items mentioned next...

Cable problems:

You should carry a mini-tool or some form of fold-able Allen wrench set, for when your cables slip or become loose.  Having brakes is a good thing.

Engine problems:

The most important piece of equipment is the one that sits atop the saddle.  That's what Greg Lemond used to say..I think.  There will be a time when you bonk or become dehydrated.  Have ample change handy and send Dr. Pepper to the rescue at the nearest vending machine.  Or, when you experience dilithium crystal overload, slam an energy gel.   Even slices of bread can be stuffed in the remaining room in your pockets.  You will never regret bringing too much fuel, but you will always regret not bringing enough!

No chain

If your chain breaks, your bike becomes the equivalent of a Razor scooter.  That's not so handy when you are a county away,  Bring some quick-links, to replace the link that breaks and a mini-chain tool to pop out the other link that didn't.  Dispose of the link that betrayed you, replacing it with the quick-link, then, pedal home...gently.
