Last year there was speculation that doubles great Daniel Nestor of Toronto really wanted upstart singles sensation Milos Raonic, currently ranked 28th in the world, as his doubles partner for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Well, after Nestor and Raonic lost in straight sets to the French team of Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra in Davis Cup action in Vancouver on Saturday, by a score of 7-6, 7-6, 6-3, the experiment is probably over.
Nestor and Raonic are great players, but don't seem to work great together. On Saturday afternoon, it was their serve that struggled. They also seemed to lack emotion, each taking a while to get into the match. Vasek Pospisil meanwhile is much more of an extrovert than Nestor and Raonic and has won with each of them in the past.
I completely understand though why Canadian Davis Cup captain chose Raonic over Pospisil because Pospisil was terrible in singles action Friday afternoon against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and he was trying to utilize Raonic's explosive serve capabilities.
It was simply an experiment that didn't work and with the Olympic Games in London on the horizon, I don't expect to see Nestor and Raonic joining forces for Canada at the Olympic Games this summer.
