Despite reports to the contrary, the nationwide release of The Runaways has not been canceled. The erroneous story broke yesterday, which, after all, was April 1st.
A tweet on the Box Office Mojo Twitter account which read "The Runaways lost most of its theaters this weekend, but will be back to around 200 on 4/9. Nationwide expansion canceled," was picked up by numerous fan sites, and taken as gospel truth, breaking the hearts of KStew devotees and Runaways fanatics alike.
However, according to a very reliable source at Apparition, the film's distributor, the tweet is a falsehood. According to the source, that information is a "total rumor. We are all set for the 9th."
If the report was indeed an April Fool's Day prank, then who was responsible? Twitter-hackingTwi-haters? Lita Ford and Jackie Fox?!?
While The Runaways limited release has not generated huge numbers at the box office, word of mouth has been good, as have most of the reviews, especially for the performances of Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, and Michael Shannon's scene-stealing turn as Runaways' producer/manager Kim Fowley.
Review: Teenage Rampage: The Runaways (2010)
While the average 15 year old Twilight fan can't buy a ticket to the R-rated film, older Twi-hards have been raving about the movie. The Runaways has resonated with other demographics as well: in Austin, one of the cities in which the film opened on March 19th, a significant percentage of ticket-buyers have been gay (both lesbians and gay men) or musicians (or both). Then again, in Austin, you can't throw a rock without hitting a guitar player...

does your apparition source know the accurate theater count, and or cities/theater locations to expect on 4-9?
I will do a follow-up with the exec, but might not be able to get an update posted until Monday.
thanks man i really hope you're right......are you really sure about that?
thank you I will check back monday
It isnt showing nationwide, well in most of the cities I have checked around my area they are not showing The runaways, disappointed
The nationwide expansion was limited to 204 theaters, which I'm sure was less than the number originally planned. Some fans have had to drive across state lines or travel 300+ miles just to see the film. What is even more puzzling is that the movie may not get a theatrical release in the countries where the original Runaways had the greatest success: the UK, Germany, Japan.
It obviously wasn't an april fools joke because it was supposed to be at my theatre on april 9TH. It was even being advertised, and then suddenly it was pulled! This is bullshit I've been waiting to see this movie since filming began!
