Don't bank on an online only, Pittsburgh networking strategy, to get hired

I found the timing of me finding this article interesting.  A few days ago I had responded to a LinkedIn post in one of my groups and I referenced about going beyond with networking techniques.  Needless to say, some members didn't appreciate my response.  In fact, I will share with you my initial response, of course you aren't seeing the whole conversation, but at least you can get the idea:

"I'm not only a recruiter, but I'm the owner of this group. First, a group on LinkedIn is not going to get you a job. The only thing that will get you a job is to network with the "right" people and positioning yourself for your next career. I use LinkedIn groups as well as the advanced search feature when I'm sourcing and yes I have found many candidates and have been successful with them. I found them, they didn't find me and so the tables need to start turning! Job seekers need to find the right connections, do the work, do the research, do the reaching out because your competition is and they are getting hired, even if they aren't the best qualified! There are over 6,000 jobs listed for Pittsburgh on Indeed http://www.indeed.com/jobs?l=Pittsburgh&indpubnum=1612837588757770 with 276 of those jobs being NEW jobs. Really? Pittsburgh is hard to break into? Depends on the job you are looking for, but even that, with the right connections, job search strategies and persistence, you will create what you want for yourself.
Do the research on what jobs are available then do the work to reach out to people on LinkedIn, networking events, social media avenues and create your own career destiny!!!!
While people are making excuses for why they can't find a job, others are doing the work needed to do and they are landing a job. Job searching is hard! I have been there plenty of times regardless of being a recruiter for over 11 years. Keep plugging away and remember that your attitude is a huge part of whether you are successful or not."

So now it brings me to today and finding this article:

Don't rely solely on the interent when developing a network of job contacts

The article starts off with "Many job hunters spend their free time bouncing around on the Internet. They lose themselves on job boards and obsess over increasing their "contact" or "friend" lists on social networking sites. It's true that online resources make it easy to gather information about your industry, research potential employers and keep in touch with former bosses and coworkers. The Internet is a great employment tool when used in moderation. But when it comes to landing a job quickly, too many hours spent online can actually hinder your success."  Read the full article

A friend of mine recently told me that I am always working, when we are out in public.  I guess because of what I do, I am always working, but to me, I'm just doing what I love and that is talking with people and getting to know them.  Then maybe realizing we might be able to help each other out in some way.  I personally do not attend many events, but it's more based on work schedule, single mom responsibilities, so my time is not that flexible.  Lucky for me, over the past year, I have had the opportunity to have the time to attend some speaking engagements and it's been great!  The face to face interaction makes a difference, it's more personal.

So check out the article Don't rely solely on the internet when developing a network of job contacts
and start networking!

P.S. So to help Pittsburgh Job Seekers, I have created Pittsburgh's Ultimate Career Connection Fan Page where job seekers can stay up to date on networking events and face to face opportunities.  Also updates on job openings and who's hiring in the area.
