The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards took place on Jan. 13, 2013, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Here is what this Golden Globe winner said backstage in the Golden Globe Awards press room.
Best Actor in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical
How close is your “House of Lies” character Marty Kaan to the character you played in “Flight”? They seem similar.
That’s interesting. I hadn’t really thought of that. I know that they both want to win at all costs. And the both sort of have the ability to turn a blind eye to truth to make it happen. But for me, that’s where the comparisons ended, as far as how I attempted to approach it. That’s interesting. I hadn’t thought about it before.
What do you think about how white-collar crime is getting more media attention these days?
I think it helped give some context to the show. And it sort of gives an understanding of the people that we’re dealing with and who my Pod is trying to go in to defeat. It was a completely new area of business to me. I didn’t know what management consultancy is. I don’t know that I still do, but it was an interesting world to delve into. And I think with everything that’s going on in the news, we do a lot of stories that could be ripped from the headlines. So it’s great to have that help contextualize it.
Have you seen “Django Unchained”? And if so, were you offended by it?
I haven’t seen the movie yet. I’m looking forward to it. Everyone who’s seen the movie says they enjoyed it and they love it. My daughter liked it.
I’m 48 years old. I think when I look toward my kids, and I think about the relationships that they have and that they’re building in the schools that they’re in and the people they relate to, the questions of racism that I dealt with growing up where I grew up are completely foreign to them.
The idea that you wouldn’t be in a relationship with somebody because they were another race, or wouldn’t be friends with somebody because they were gay, or the prejudices that I grew up with — a lot of those to a 13-year-old or a 14-year-old, they don’t even make sense. So I thank hip-hop and the popular culture of that for challenging those prejudices. I haven’t seen [“Django Unchanined”]. I’m looking forward to it.
