On April 15, 2014, Domino's decided to shock the food industry and take the definition of unhealthy food to an entirely new level. On this day they decided to begin promotion of their new Specialty Chicken. This new dish is a form of pizza using fried chicken as the 'crust'.

Buzzfeed ran an article showing exactly what this new pizza type product is composed of. The product was initially thought of as a stuffed crust pizza with chicken meat in the enhanced crust. Instead, pieces of breaded chicken are used as the base, and toppings are placed on top.

I think it would be more appropriate to refer to this dish as topped chicken popper more than a chicken pizza. Either way, I think we can all agree that this looks like a dish worth trying at least once. Reception has ranged from some referring to it as a culinary monstrosity, to others joking that it should come with a shot of insulin.

Domino's has been on a crusade to remake their image for the last few years. In addition to reassessing their basic pizza ingredients, to introducing new products such as this Specialty Chicken, they have made strides towards improving their position in the semi-fast food market. Some of their efforts have been well received while others have been criticized.

I do not see an issue with the new item. A fried chicken sandwich with all the trimmings and toppings could end up being just as unhealthy, if not more so, than this new product. This product is just the latest in incredibly unhealthy items available at our nation's restaurants, a report from the surgeon general on rising obesity rates may be soon to follow.
