The Conga Room seemed to shake last Saturday to the fast paced music of the New York based merengue group Amarfis y la Banda de Attake. Led by Amarfis Aquino, who was born in Sabana Grande de Boya, Dominican Republic, the 12-piece band performed the merengue callejero of rapid beats that has made them well known throughout Latin America, in front of an audience that included a large group of Dominican followers.
With the big, uncombed, hair that by now is a trademark, sunglasses that left his face only once or twice to wipe his sweat off, and expensive label clothing, Amarfis was accompanied on stage by his regular New York band, which included Guatemalan vocalist, Martin. The group performed original work as well as 'merengue-ized' versions of popular rock-en-espanol songs such as Lamento Boliviano. Non surprisingly, a few fans worked their way up on stage to do some of those provocative moves that come along with this music genre next to the energetic performers.
