Domestic violence victim and paramedic fell in love

A domestic violence attack required paramedics to begin care and transport the victim to the hospital. The story has a happy ending in that the victim and her hero paramedic fell in love.

On January 24, 2012, Robert Lee Burton, Jr. stabbed ex-girlfriend Melissa Dohme 32 times. She suffered stab wounds on her face, head, hands and arms. Slashed and bloodied, Dohme almost died from her injuries.

Paramedic Cameron Hill was one of the first responders to the 911 call. Dohme was hospitalized for three weeks. Hill spoke with the Tampa Bay Times, “I don’t know why, but I knew I’d see her again. I believed she would live.”

During her time in the hospital, she flat lined four times and had a stroke. After healing from the injuries, Melissa Dohme began sharing her stories as an inspirational speaker.

Dohme spoke to the news show, Bay News 9 to share her story. She told them, “I know it’s a miracle that I am still here. Even the trauma doctor in his notes wrote, nothing short of miraculous.”

Last October, Hill and Dohme ran into each other at a local church while she was speaking to the congregation. This time, they traded numbers.

Dohme told the paper, “I was weirdly giddy. I had this feeling about him.” She went on to say that Cameron Hill asked her out on a date and they have been a couple ever since.

Dohme said, “When I look back on that night, I can’t think of it as all bad anymore because I met Cameron. He’s the one I’ve been waiting for. My fairy tale.”
