A 73-year-old Buford man allegedly shot his 80-year-old live-in partner in the back, killing her. A short time later he was shot to death. But officials aren’t sure if he was killed by the responding officer or if his wound was self-inflicted.
It’s unclear who made the call about the domestic dispute happening at the home in the 6400 block of Old Shadburn Road.
At 12:36 a.m. officers arrived at the home where they said Mr. James Daniel Guler and Ms. Betty Jo Massengale lived.
An officer was approaching the home when he saw a woman walking towards him in the driveway, police spokesman Sgt. Brian Doan said.
“The female was then shot in the back by the male suspect,” Sgt. Doan said. “The female fell to the ground and the officer fired at the suspect. The suspect fell to the ground and fired another shot.”
Both Ms. Massengale and Mr. Guler died at the scene.
“We’re not sure if the officer struck the male with his rounds,” Sgt. Doan said, according to a media report.
The officer, who has not been identified, was not injured. He was placed on routine administrative leave.
Ms. Massengale and Mr. Guler both lived in the home, but were not married, police said.
Investigators could find no history of domestic-related matters involving the two within the past several years, spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said.
