With the close of last night’s edition of WWE RAW, we said goodbye to 2012 and all that it has brought us...
...by watching Dolph Ziggler and AJ get covered in filth.
This scene, something which could really only play out in the larger than life world of professional wrestling, may serve to be more than just a piece of light toilet humor. In all likelihood, this event is something of a metaphor for the 2013 that Dolph Ziggler will have.
In the unpredictable world of pro-wrestling, one thing is almost nearly an absolute certainty: in 2013, Dolph Ziggler will successfully cash in his Money in the Bank contract, but his will be a short and forgettable title reign.
That stings a bit to read, doesn’t it? No matter how much of an internet darling Dolph Ziggler is, he is never quite as over as we all would like him to be. One week he gets a reaction, the next week he doesn’t. It’s very difficult to justify pushing a guy that doesn’t necessarily have “it,” and Dolph continually reveals a lack of consistency that just cannot be present in a main event level competitor.
Dolph’s current storyline, in which he is paired with AJ to feud with John Cena, simply feels like a weak attempt at recycling the Edge and Lita love affair of old. Except the difference is Edge had tons of charisma to back up his talent, and Dolph often falls flat on the mic.
The only saving grace for Dolph Ziggler is that the WWE roster is remarkably thin on main event level talent. Outside of John Cena and CM Punk, virtually no one in the main event scene exhibits the ability to electrify an audience, and both John Cena and CM Punk tend to do more to polarize an audience than anything else.
With that last detail in mind, it’s safe to say Ziggler will not be the second man in WWE history to fail in cashing in his Money in the Bank contract... but unless Ziggler has some incredible revelation in his character in the next few months, it’s practically a guarantee that his World Heavyweight Title reign will be as short and forgettable as an Alberto Del Rio title run.
Ziggler is a talented wrestler, but in-ring ability is not enough to carry him to stardom. 2013 may be the final year he has to prove himself capable of making it to the next level.
