Dolly Parton talks Joyful Noise, eating bugs and plastic surgery

Country music sweetheart and superstar, Dolly Parton, has a new movie opening in St. Louis on January 13, 2012.  Joyful Noise, starring Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, is the story of two women with opposing views, both trying to guide a local choir to victory in a national competition.  The results are both hilarious and inspirational.

On January 11, Dolly Parton sat down to talk with David Letterman about Joyful Noise, but the conversation got a whole lot more interesting than just the making of her latest movie.   Dolly Parton, who is always good for a funny story, recalled a tour stop in Australia, where she says, "they have so many creatures...and the bugs are bigger than the bats."  She said at one point she did swallow a bug and though she's on a high protein diet to keep fitting into her clothes, that wasn't the kind of protein she wanted.

In addition to the bug that got closer than she wanted it to, Dolly Parton provided the Late Show viewers with the hilarious imagery of her performing on stage in Australia with creatures swarming all around her.  She said they were flocking to her as though she was a beacon and she was swatting at them as she sang.  She said, "They (the audience) thought I was dancing," but really, she was stomping on bugs.  David Letterman commended her for keeping her composure through that ordeal.

Later in the show, David Letterman showed a clip from Dolly Parton's new movie, Joyful Noise.  The clip was a scene in which Dolly and Queen Latifah's characters were having an argument.   Vi Rose, played by Queen Latifah, was condeming G.G.'s (Dolly) methods.  G.G. replied with "I am who I am."  In a spoof on Dolly Parton's real life admission to plastic surgery, Vi Rose responded with, "Maybe you were five procedures ago." After a sequence in which G.G. got pretty riled up and began throwing things at Vi Rose, she retorted with, "God didn't make plastic surgeons so they could starve!"  As the clip ended and the camera cut back to Dolly Parton on the David Letterman set, Dolly enthusiastically said with a big smile, "That's my philosophy!", delighting the audience with her honesty and her humor.

On a more serious note, Dolly Parton said that she really loved making the movie, Joyful Noise, and that she enjoyed working with Queen Latifah.  Dolly Parton put her duly noted 42 years of experience in the music industry to work on the film, having written three of the songs on the soundtrack.  To close the show, she performed one of those songs, From Here To the Moon and Back, a pretty declaration-of-love type ballad .

Joyful Noise stars Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah and has a supporting cast that includes Jeremy Jordan, known for his role as Guy in Never Been Kissed and Keke Palmer, who previously worked with Queen Latifah in Barbershop 2: Back in Business and later starred in Akeelah and the Bee and True Jackons, VP.
