Dollar counterfeiting has become big business for Peru, a country that has slipped into the number one spot for counterfeiting the American dollar. The culprits are making the counterfeit money with low-tech counterfeiting techniques, according to UPI.com on Sept. 5.
The counterfeiters are using inexpensive and commercially available bond paper, it’s not durable and will disintegrate if it gets wet. The printing machines used to make the paper bills are the same type used for printing newspapers. It is a very simple operation.
These counterfeiters are using children to do much of the finishing work on the counterfeit money. The kids are inserting the security strips and doing the texturing of the paper, making the counterfeit bills looking close to the real thing.
Peru has also recently taken the top spot from Columbia as the leading cocaine producer, now they are number one in the funny money business too. Because of all the counterfeit money coming out of Peru, the United States Secret Service has set up shop in Peru.
The Secret Service is the arm of the government that is responsible for protecting America’s currency. They set up an office in Lima last year to battle against the counterfeiting of American currency.
